Sex offender takes his own life in London prison after believing staff were trying to kill him

"A report published last week by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO), Adrian Usher, found Mr Magloire did not receive the level of care at HMP Wormwood Scrubs he could have expected in the community, with issues including differing perceptions from staff members about the significance of his paranoia."

"A mental health nurse at the prison was also said to have called him a piece of shit and suggested it did not matter whether he died as he fought for his life."

"Mr Magloire was paranoid that family, prisoners and officers wanted to kill him because of his offences (there was no evidence that this was the case), the report states. Between these episodes, Mr Magloire engaged in the regime, mixed with other prisoners, and held a number of different jobs."

Peter Magloire, convicted of historic sex offences and serving a life sentence, died from asphyxiation in HMP Wormwood Scrubs in January 2023. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman found he received substandard care compared to community standards. Magloire experienced paranoid and delusional thinking, believing prisoners and staff threatened him due to his offences, though no evidence supported this. A mental health nurse made derogatory comments and expressed indifference to his death. Magloire had previously been sectioned and treated at a secure unit before transfer to Wormwood Scrubs. Staff held differing views on the significance of his mental health symptoms. HMP Wormwood Scrubs has accepted recommendations and implemented improvements.
