Rwandan citizens stranded in Myanmar and Laos have reached out for help due to being victims of job scams, leading to government intervention. Influencer Richard Kwizera highlighted their plight, prompting the Rwandan authorities to act. Ten individuals have already been repatriated, with the government acknowledging ongoing concerns about illegal recruitment and human trafficking. Many Rwandans have been lured by fraudsters promising employment opportunities abroad, only to end up in dangerous situations, including forced labor. The government, in partnership with international organizations, is working on further repatriations.
"There are dozens of Rwandan nationals trafficked to Southeast Asian countries, especially Myanmar and Laos, who are appealing to the Rwandan government to help facilitate their return home."
"We are aware of 5 more who are still there and we are working to bring them home," said government spokesperson Yolande Makolo.
