RTE workers call on broadcaster to oppose Israel's participation in Eurovision
Briefly

The Dublin Broadcasting Branch of the National Union of Journalists has urged RTÉ to oppose Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, echoing sentiments from other European public broadcasters. Citing concerns over Israel's humanitarian record in Gaza and the targeting of Palestinian media professionals, the branch aims to align with Slovenia, Spain, and Iceland's broadcasters who have called for Israel's suspension. Chair Emma O'Kelly highlighted the implications for media freedom and EBU's values, advocating for urgent action by RTÉ in support of journalists and adherence to international standards.
The position of our members is clear, the chair of the Dublin Broadcasting Branch, Emma O'Kelly, following a lunchtime meeting today. She said they do not believe that Israel should be allowed to participate in the Eurovision, and hope RTÉ will adopt the same view.
As journalists, we note Israel's targeting and killing of Palestinian media workers, who provide photographic, video and online content to newsrooms across the EBU in the absence of international journalists gaining access to Gaza.
Considering all of the above, we are requesting that RTÉ, in line with other state broadcasters which have already done so, publicly and as a matter of urgency call on the EBU to suspend Israel's appearance at Eurovision.
The formal stance of the Irish state is reflected in stronger statements against Israel's actions in Gaza; our position demands similar accountability from broadcasters.
