"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. "A High Court judge has revealed that over 300 Metropolitan Police officers and staff have declared their membership of the Freemasons or similar "hierarchical associations" after the force mandated such disclosures last month. The requirement stems from a December announcement by the Met, which added Freemasonry and comparable organisations to its declarable associations policy. This move has, however, prompted legal action from the representative bodies for Freemasons across England, Wales, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands."
The Independent emphasizes on-the-ground reporting across major issues including reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech, and funds reporters through voluntary donations to keep journalism free of paywalls. The Met mandated disclosure of membership in Freemasonry and similar hierarchical associations, requiring personnel to report past or present membership of groups with confidential membership and mutual protection. Over 300 Metropolitan Police officers and staff declared such memberships after the policy change. Representative Freemason bodies across England, Wales, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands have launched High Court proceedings claiming the policy is discriminatory.
