"Cahal O'Reilly was five miles from catching a ferry in Holyhead in Wales, when an uninsured driver travelling at 70mph collided with him before leaving the scene. The 55-year-old was thrown into the air and landed 20 metres away on the side of the road, leaving a passing motorist to think he had died. Mr O'Reilly was left with catastrophic injuries and needed to be operated on for 22 hours following the crash in 2021."

Thurrock in Essex registers as the worst place for uninsured driving in the UK. West Midlands postal areas account for five of the top 15 hotspots, while Peterborough, Manchester and Belfast also feature among worst offending areas. Croydon recorded 30 claims against uninsured drivers over two years, the highest in one postal district, but ranked 169th after adjusting for population density. The MIB launched Operation Drive Insured to work with police to remove uninsured vehicles. A cyclist, Cahal O'Reilly, suffered catastrophic injuries after a hit-and-run by an uninsured driver and required extensive surgery and rehabilitation.
