Report hate incidents, crime or not, says Met
"If someone feels threatened because of their race or religion they should call us. We will work out whether it's a crime. In either event we need to know about it. If it's a sign of escalating tension in an area or escalating tension between neighbours, we want to know about it."
"limited resources on the things Parliament says are illegal"
"Now though, the extremists are trying to turn back the clock on the progress we've made."
The Metropolitan Police urge Londoners to report hate incidents even when they do not meet the legal threshold for a crime so officers can monitor and track rising community tensions. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said calls help determine whether an incident is criminal and inform allocation of limited resources toward illegal activity. BMT, a government-funded organisation monitoring anti-Muslim hate, said the guidance caused confusion among victims and communities. A helpline with WhatsApp, webchat and email has been set up for reports. Mayor Sadiq Khan warned extremists are trying to reverse social progress. Concerns about officers' conduct were referenced after a BBC Panorama documentary.
