A man in his 30s was shot by police while wielding a chainsaw near Hollingbourne, Kent, as officers believed he carried a firearm or improvised explosive device. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the incident. Unarmed officers initially responded to an assault call, and when the suspect refused to exit, armed officers were deployed. Bodycam footage confirmed the man’s behavior led to police firing baton rounds before he was shot. He sustained serious injuries but they are not life-threatening, and a bomb squad was involved at the scene.

The man ignored orders to put down the chainsaw, leading to a police officer discharging a firearm after the man moved towards them.
The IOPC has launched an investigation into the incident, confirming the man sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being shot.
Among the weapons found at the scene were a chainsaw and a device that was made safe by the bomb squad.
