Plans for Basildon data centre approved
"This is a fantastic opportunity for our borough,"
"It places Basildon at the heart of the UK's AI revolution and will act as a magnet for high-value, technology-led businesses, driving skills development and creating long-term employment opportunities."
"This is a chance for the area to become a powerhouse in the AI data economy,"
"We're proud to be investing in Basildon and helping to position it as a centre of technological excellence."
Basildon Council granted planning permission for a £1.3 billion datacentre on a 1.8-hectare site in Wickford, Essex, to be developed by Caineal. The project is expected to generate more than 600 construction-related jobs and 120 highly skilled operational roles, with potential for five indirect roles per direct position via supply chains and service providers. Construction will begin once final planning formalities are completed on the site adjacent to the A127 and Old Nevendon Road. Planned onsite elements include a substation, an energy centre and public open space. Original plans were scaled back over green belt concerns, with commitments to on-site Biodiversity Net Gain, a new local nature reserve, and financial contributions toward education, employment, skills development and sustainable transport.
