Pilot's 1930 Australia flight to be celebrated
Briefly

The 95th anniversary of Amy Johnson's historic flight to Australia will be honored at Croydon airport, where she departed in 1930. Celebrations include a biplane flypast, guided tours, and exhibitions focusing on her achievements as a pioneer with limited technology and experience. Micha Nestor emphasized the importance of celebrating women in aviation and inspiring future generations. Johnson, who undertook the journey with just 100 flying hours, navigated numerous challenges to successfully reach Australia, solidifying her status as a celebrity and a role model in aviation history.
"What we want to do is inspire future aviation enthusiasts, and also highlight women in aviation," said Micha Nestor, visitor centre manager at Croydon airport.
"Amy was one of the major celebrities of the 1930s. We really want to amplify her story, because Amy was a big deal."
"There's one term that she used to use, and that's air mindedness... that’s what we want to promote: thinking on the ball."
