In an interview with Piers Morgan, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressed concerns over the current military operations in Gaza led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While acknowledging the historical context and justification of earlier military actions, Olmert argued that the continuation of these operations has resulted in significant Palestinian casualties. He suggested that the objectives of the military campaigns have been met and that the focus should shift to leadership decisions rather than further escalation, raising questions about potential war crimes and accountability at the International Criminal Court.
Up until recently, there was an international consensus that the Israeli operation was inevitable and acceptable and justified, and I entirely subscribe to this, as most of the Israelis did for obvious reasons because of what happened on the 7th of October... But now the question is what else can we achieve by expanding the military operation which can justify the cost?
There should be a voice, and if as a result of the fact that I was prime minister and I'm fairly well known in the international community that people want to hear what I have to say, I have to say it, yes.
