"trying to stop Mr Sandiford in the safest, quickest way possible"
Met Police Constable Liam Newman, 31, denies causing grievous bodily harm to Leonard Sandiford. Newman responded to reports of a burglary at a bookmaker's in Chigwell Road at about 05:00 GMT on 24 April 2022. Officers blocked a white Ford van driven by Sandiford as it turned into a side road and attempted to stop the vehicle. Newman used his baton to strike the driver's side, opened the door and attempted to pull Sandiford out. Newman said he believed Sandiford posed a high risk and that suspected burglars commonly carry weapons. Following a chase, Newman Tasered Sandiford, who fell from about 1.5m–1.8m and injured his spinal cord; Sandiford is now tetraplegic and uses a wheelchair. Newman said he honestly believed Sandiford was trying to run him over due to an earlier incident, though he now accepts that was not the case.
