"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story. The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.Your support makes all the difference."
"Khelisyah Ashamu, a 26-year-old mother-of-one, had travelled to Izmir in February 2019 for a gastric bypass operation. She had been struggling with her weight and was particularly concerned about her stomach's appearance after a Caesarean section. She turned to Get Slim in Turkey, an agency operated by British expatriates, paying 3,300 for the procedure and accommodation. Eight days after the surgery, Ms Ashamu's condition deteriorated significantly. She suffered a cardiac arrest following exploratory follow-up surgery and died in a Turkish hospital on 9 February 2019."
The Independent funds on-the-ground journalism across topics including reproductive rights, climate change, and Big Tech. The outlet emphasizes parsing facts from messaging and does not use paywalls, relying on donations to send reporters to cover events and investigate matters such as political PAC finances and documentaries about American women fighting for reproductive rights. A separate case involved grieving parents who secured an 858,000 compensation payout after their daughter, Khelisyah Ashamu, died following budget gastric bypass surgery in Izmir, Turkey. She suffered complications leading to cardiac arrest and a coroner recorded gastrointestinal ischaemia as the cause of death. Her parents launched a High Court claim against the agency.
