Old trains, new wheels: Southeastern's train wheels heads to Crewe for a major refresh
"Southeastern's Class 465 Networker fleet first entered passenger service in 1992, and the overhaul enables Southeastern to keep operating them while it waits for a replacement set of more accessible trains in a few years time. The maintenance project will see the wheel bogies that sit underneath the trains removed from them at Southeastern's Slade Green depot near Dartford, then shipped to Crewe, where Alstom staff will carry out the work."
"The project covers up to 398 power bogies across 97 four-car units and will take about 2 years to complete. During the overhaul, they will replace the wheels and traction motors, replace worn-out equipment, overhaul the gearboxes and check the axles for wear. They will then be repainted before being returned to London. The Slade Green depot also recently received an upgraded lathe to maintain the new wheels when they are returned to Southeastern."
"This award is a strong vote of confidence in Crewe's capability and in the expertise of our people. Our Centre of Excellence will deliver a safe, high‑quality overhaul of almost 400 Networker bogies for the South East of England while sustaining skilled jobs in the North. It's a great example of how Alstom's investment and Crewe's heritage are helping keep passengers moving reliably across the country every day,"
A £20 million contract will fund refurbishment of wheels and bogies for nearly 100 Southeastern Class 465 Networker units. The Class 465 fleet entered service in 1992, and the overhaul will extend their usable life while replacements are procured. Bogies will be removed at Slade Green depot and sent to Alstom's Crewe Works, covering up to 398 power bogies across 97 four‑car units over about two years. Work includes wheel and traction motor replacement, worn-equipment renewal, gearbox overhauls, axle inspections and repainting. The scheme supports 50 Alstom staff, involves owner Eversholt Rail, and follows Slade Green lathe upgrades. Crewe will also manufacture HS2 bogies, reviving domestic production.
