A recent analysis reveals that mobile phone users receive excessive news alerts, leading to 'alert fatigue.' The percentage of users receiving alerts has significantly increased from 6% to 23% in the U.S. and from 3% to 18% in the U.K. Some news outlets, including CNN Indonesia, send up to 50 alerts daily, overwhelming recipients. Consequently, 43% of users who opted out of alerts cite the incessant notifications as the reason, while nearly 80% of surveyed individuals do not receive any news alerts currently due to news avoidance and emotional distress, according to the Reuters Institute report.
Many users disable news alerts due to excessive notifications; with some receiving up to 50 daily, 43% of those who stopped using alerts cite alert fatigue.
'It is a tightrope that publishers have been walking,' said Nic Newman. 'If they send too many, people uninstall the app. Bad actors spoil the party.'
