Police Scotland stated that both Sturgeon and former SNP treasurer Colin Beattie will not face prosecution after a lengthy inquiry known as Operation Branchform. The investigation looked into possible fraudulent handling of around £650,000 in the party's funds. This announcement came after Sturgeon's former husband, Peter Murrell, had a court appearance concerning a separate charge of embezzlement. The legal proceedings have now concluded concerning Sturgeon and Beattie.
