Anne McAlpine was stalked for years by 71-year-old Robert Green, who was convicted last week and ordered to stay away from her for life. The stalking began with letters and gifts delivered to her workplace, including declarations of love and poems, sometimes three or four per week over eight to twelve months. She described many items as unpleasant and a nuisance rather than overtly threatening. The stalker believed she was sending subliminal messages via television and commented on her clothes, movements, and how she held her pen. After McAlpine's engagement became public the letters stopped briefly, then escalated when the man appeared outside her home at night; she locked the car doors and drove away.
