New Archbishop of Canterbury to make 87-mile pilgrimage from London
"For centuries, faithful pilgrims have flocked to Canterbury, and I will be reflecting on this tradition as we make our way through the Kent countryside and its towns and cities. Dame Sarah, who served as Bishop of London for almost a decade, described it as deeply humbling to be following in the footsteps of those who have walked this ancient route."
Dame Sarah Mullally, the first woman to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury, will embark on a six-day pilgrimage covering 87 miles from St Paul's Cathedral in London to Canterbury Cathedral. Beginning on Tuesday and concluding on March 22, the journey follows the historic Becket Camino route and includes stops for prayer services at churches, cathedrals, and abbeys, along with visits to schools and ecumenical organizations. Accompanied by her husband Eamonn, Dame Sarah will become the first Archbishop of Canterbury in modern history to undertake this pilgrimage. Her formal enthronement is scheduled for March 25. Previously serving as Bishop of London for nearly a decade, Dame Sarah described the pilgrimage as deeply humbling, reflecting on centuries of faithful pilgrims who have traveled this ancient route through Kent's countryside.
