In Myanmar, search and rescue operations continue following a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake, which has claimed over 2,056 lives, with many still missing. Affected areas, particularly Mandalay, are experiencing severe communication disruptions, making it challenging to assess the full extent of the disaster. Fearful residents are avoiding their homes due to ongoing aftershocks, pushing them to camp in streets instead. The military junta has declared a week of mourning, reflecting the country's grief and uncertainty as rescue efforts face significant logistical challenges. The situation remains critical as teams work against time to find survivors.
"The situation is so dire that it's hard to express what is happening," AFP news agency quoted Aung Myint Hussein, chief administrator of Mandalay's Sajja North mosque as saying.
With communications severely disrupted, the true scale of the disaster remains unclear and it is feared the death toll could rise significantly.
