"Ashley's abuse started many years ago. Despite working away during the week, her ex-husband Jason Howe monitored and controlled her every move. She was not allowed to visit family for more than an hour at a time and he would phone her the moment she finished work and order her to head home immediately. After he got a driving ban and had to leave work, the abuse intensified. Their marriage eventually ended in December 2023 after 18 years together, but that was not the end of Ashley's torment."
"Howe bombarded her with threatening calls and texts, telling her he would throw acid in her face, ram her vehicle off the road and set fire to her home and those of friends and family. Ashley took his threats so seriously she and her mother would wear sunglasses when they went out, fearing they would be blinded if acid was thrown in their faces. Matters came to a head when he put an Apple air tag on her car."
Government agreed to review stalking law after victims campaigned. Two victims were introduced to a minister to share experiences. Ashley endured years of monitoring and control by her ex-husband Jason Howe, who restricted family visits, phoned her after work and intensified abuse after a driving ban. After their marriage ended in December 2023, Howe sent threatening calls and texts, including threats to throw acid, ram her vehicle and set fires. Howe placed an Apple air tag on her car, was arrested after following an unmarked police car, jailed for three years and four months and given an indefinite restraining order. The order was later amended to allow him road access through an exclusion zone for "work reasons" without Ashley's consultation. Ashley wants the law changed so victims have a say.
