"An elderly woman with dementia has been left terrified to leave home after she was muggedjust yards from her front door in east London. Katherine Stockdale, 84, was targeted on Sturry Street in Poplar on Saturday, January 24, while walking back from the local market with her trolley. CCTV footage, which has been circulating on social media, appears to show a woman stopping Katherine in the street and asking her something."
"As Katherine searches through her bag, the woman appears to snatch it, causing Katherine to fall before the woman runs off with the item. Met Police has confirmed it is investigating the incident, in which cigarettes and cash were stolen. Katherine's daughter, Jackie, told The Standard that her mum will no longer be able to go out alone and said the incident has left her scared to go out with her."
"Now I feel as vulnerable as her, Jackie said. I feel like a prisoner in my own home. Jackie has lived in the area for 14 years and spent all of her life in London, but said she could never have imagined something like this happening when she was younger. You hardly ever heard of it, she said, and when you did it was breaking news but now it's just another theft."
"This marks the second time in the last two years that Katherine has been the victim of a mugging. On the first occasion, she was using a cashpoint in the area when strangers looked over her shoulder before snatching the cash and running off. Jackie told The Standard that she feels street muggings and low-level crimes are not a priority for police, saying officers are under-resourced and lack the funding to pursue them."
