"There was an early public acknowledgment that a serious error had occurred, yet Mr Morton was forced to pursue proceedings to the brink of trial to achieve any finality. Prolonged denial and delay can itself become a source of real harm."
"I lost my sense of safety and calm in my own home. I felt physically and mentally diminished in a way I never had before. I felt as if I had aged into an old man overnight. This process has been exhausting and distressing, particularly at my age."
Armed police forced entry into an 80-year-old man's home during a dawn raid looking for a different suspect and shot him with a Taser at close range. The pensioner, who has a pacemaker and lives alone, fell, was restrained, handcuffed, detained for 11 hours and transferred to hospital over concerns about the stun gun's effect on his device before being released without further action. The man brought civil claims alleging negligence, assault and battery, false imprisonment and breach of private life rights. The Metropolitan Police settled the claim out of court without admitting liability; an internal investigation identified no misconduct.
