Met Police seize 240,000 of fake goods in money laundering blitz on London's high streets
"More than 30 London high street businesses including barbers, minimarts and vape shops have been raided as part of the UK's biggest ever crackdown of its kind on money laundering. Cash-rich businesses, which have proliferated the capital's boroughs, can be used for a range of crimes including disguising dirty money, hiding drugs, people trafficking and smuggling tobacco and vapes, officials say. Fast food outlets, car washes and workshops, nail bars, money service bureaus and even sweet shops were also targeted."
"This operation shows the Met's commitment to keeping London's high streets safe, fair and free from criminal exploitation. Criminal networks use cash-heavy businesses to hide illicit profits, exploit vulnerable workers and undercut honest traders. Our work focuses on disrupting that activity by seizing illegal goods, removing criminal cash and gathering vital evidence for ongoing investigations. We are committed to protecting communities and supporting legitimate businesses, while ensuring anyone seeking to profit from criminal activity is identified and held to account."
More than 30 London high street businesses across multiple sectors were raided in a major crackdown targeting money laundering. Cash-rich premises such as barbers, minimarts, vape shops, fast food outlets, car washes, workshops, nail bars, money service bureaus and sweet shops were identified as vulnerable to exploitation. Officers seized illegal goods, removed criminal cash and gathered evidence to support ongoing investigations. HMRC supported activity at 14 venues and launched five investigations, immigration officers attended 13 businesses, and Apple assisted at six locations where counterfeit devices were identified. The activity aims to protect communities, vulnerable workers and legitimate traders.
