Two Metropolitan Police officers, PCs Justin Hulf and Mara Sow, have been cleared of wrongdoing related to the death of Mikias Tekeste, a homeless man who died after swallowing drugs. Tekeste collapsed in a cell at Croydon custody centre, having concealed and ingested the drugs during transport to the station. Despite the positive drug test and subsequent monitoring, he experienced multiple seizures and passed away from cocaine toxicity. The panel ruled the officers performed adequately given the information at their disposal, and their conduct was in line with police behavior standards.
The panel found that the officers acted correctly and the risk assessment was accurate based on the information available at the time, ensuring adequate supervision.
Mikias Tekeste, who had been a father and asylum seeker, passed away from cocaine toxicity after collapsing in a police cell following a series of seizures.
