An armed Metropolitan Police officer, known as W80, shot dead 28-year-old Jermaine Baker near Wood Green Crown Court on 11 December 2015 during an attempted plot to snatch two prisoners from a van. Baker was a front-seat passenger in a stolen Audi A6 and was unarmed; an imitation firearm was later found in the rear of the vehicle. The counter-terrorism specialist fired at close range, reportedly believing Baker was reaching for a gun. The hearing was told W80 opened fire immediately after opening the passenger door, that Baker's left hand was raised and empty, and that no weapon was seen. W80 faces misconduct proceedings over alleged breaches of professional standards on use of force.
