Manhunt after jailed Epping hotel asylum seeker mistakenly released
"We are urgently working with police to return an offender to custody following a release in error at HMP Chelmsford. Public protection is our top priority, and we have launched an investigation into this incident."
"We are urgently working with the police to track him down, and I've ordered an urgent investigation. Kebatu must be deported for his crimes, not on our streets."
"He was appalled at the release in error at HMP Chelmsford."
Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, an Ethiopian national who arrived in the UK on a small boat, was jailed for 12 months after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old in Epping. He was convicted of five offences, given a five-year sexual harm prevention order banning contact with females, and made to sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years. Kebatu was due to be moved to an immigration detention centre ahead of planned deportation but was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford, prompting a police manhunt. The Prison Service has launched an investigation and removed an officer from discharge duties. Protests occurred outside Kebatu's former residence.
