"We can confirm that, in the initial stages of the attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, a call was made by the attacker to police, claiming to pledge allegiance to the so-called Islamic State, said a spokesperson for Counter Terrorism Policing North West. We are continuing to investigate the full circumstances and motivation behind what happened. Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, made the phone call after driving a car into pedestrians"
"Armed officers shot dead Al-Shamie, who had appeared to be wearing an explosive belt, at the scene. Police later said the device was not viable. Police also said an officer had accidentally shot one of the two victims killed in the attack. Adrian Daulby, 53, was accidentally shot as he and other worshippers barricaded the synagogue to prevent al-Shamie from entering."
Jihad al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, attacked the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester on October 2 during Yom Kippur. He drove a car into pedestrians and then attacked people with a knife outside the synagogue. He called police during the assault to claim he was acting for the so-called Islamic State. Armed officers shot and killed al-Shamie at the scene; an apparent explosive belt was later found to be not viable. Two worshippers died, including one accidentally shot by an officer, and three men were hospitalised with serious injuries. Authorities said al-Shamie was not on counterterrorism radar and had not been referred to Prevent.
