"What haunts me the most is the attack was meant for me. I was the target, petrol was poured on me and my life was meant to end that night. I can't escape the thought that I was spared when they were taken. How can I move on when they never had the chance to."
"Bryonie's children were my babies, my joy and that knowing they died because someone wanted to kill me is a torment I can never put into words."
Sharaz Ali, 40, was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for murdering Bryonie Gawith, 29, and her three children—Denisty, 9, Oscar, 5, and Aubree, 22 months—by deliberately setting fire to their home on August 21, 2024. Ali targeted the house seeking revenge on his ex-girlfriend Antonia Gawith, who had ended their seven-year abusive relationship and was staying with her sister. Although Antonia escaped the fire, the others were trapped upstairs. Calum Sunderland, 26, who assisted Ali by kicking in the door, received a life sentence with an 18-year minimum term for manslaughter. Antonia delivered an emotional victim statement expressing profound trauma, stating she was the intended target and struggles with survivor's guilt over the deaths of her sister and nieces and nephew.
