"He was just rage. He looked like a monster. His behaviour was just wrong. She just fell. I went to help her but he screamed at me to get in the car. Witness Paige Allen described the brutal assault, capturing the severity and callousness of Owusu's actions as he attacked Mukhtar and prevented others from assisting her."
"Owusu was heard on CCTV berating another man for wanting to turn back and help the victim, referring to him as a weak link. This demonstrates Owusu's deliberate indifference to Mukhtar's condition and his attempt to prevent anyone from providing aid after abandoning her injured on the pavement."
"He aimed two kicks at her face as she sat on the pavement and, when she stood up, punched her in the neck a blow that proved fatal. Mukhtar was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered a fractured skull and brain injury from the violent assault."
Duane Owusu was found guilty of killing 27-year-old Zahwa Mukhtar after a jury deliberated for nearly 12 hours at the Old Bailey. Mukhtar, a finance assistant, met Owusu and his group during a night out in Stoke Newington on August 16, 2025, where they used laughing gas balloons. When returning to Dagenham in an overcrowded Mercedes, Mukhtar argued with one of Owusu's female friends. Owusu threw Mukhtar's phone out the window, then ejected her from the vehicle. He kicked her face twice and punched her in the neck, a fatal blow that caused a fractured skull and brain injury. Witnesses described his violent assault, and CCTV captured him discouraging others from helping the victim. Mukhtar was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
