Man avoids prison despite being caught with more AI child sex images
"He did not understand the images of clothed children from an open source social media site were prohibited. Clearly they are prohibited and that has been explained to him and he has admitted and accepted he has done something wrong."
"The court heard the images were either cartoons or photographs manipulated to put on a child's face. The images were found on his phone on a visit from probation and officers noticed it had a Grok and X app on it which is used for AI bots with the ability to generate and create deepfake images of women and children."
James Castell, a 40-year-old from East Sussex, was sentenced to an 18-month community order with additional unpaid work and rehabilitation activities at Hove Crown Court. He was already serving an 18-month suspended sentence imposed in December for creating AI-generated child sexual abuse material, making him one of the first in Sussex convicted of this offense. In February, he admitted to possessing eight prohibited AI-generated images of children downloaded from X. The images were either cartoons or manipulated photographs. Officers discovered the illegal content on his phone during a probation visit and found apps capable of generating deepfake images. The judge warned Castell he narrowly escaped imprisonment.
