Man and woman arrested for manslaughter after one-year-old girl died 'coming into contact with chemicals' in Newham flat
"First of all, our thoughts are with the family of the young child who has so tragically lost their life in this terrible incident."
"As a council we have taken speedy measures to ensure those residents who were evacuated are being cared for in a warm, safe environment."
Emergency services responded to a flat on Barking Road in Upton Park at 1:18pm after two adults and two children complained of a smell of chemicals. Firefighters conducted a systematic sweep, ventilated the scene and evacuated about 12 nearby residents as a precaution. One child, a one-year-old girl, later died in hospital while receiving treatment. A 41-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, not known to the victim, were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and remain in custody. Other injured people, including a six-year-old, sustained injuries described as not life-threatening or life-changing. Next of kin are being supported and the Metropolitan Police continue to investigate; the incident is not being treated as terrorism.
