Lammy hints at U-turn to allow Palestinian scholars to bring children to UK
"I don't want to cut across the decisions that the new foreign secretary Yvette [Cooper] and the new home secretary are making, but they will have seen that broadcast, they will no doubt have seen what the Refugee Council and Oxford are saying and I know the intent is to bring people to study and not to cause them further pain or hardship."
"I was told [I could not bring my children] just days before our evacuation when I received an email from the FCDO It is impossible for me to leave my children behind."
A possible government reversal could allow evacuated Palestinian scholarship students to bring their children to the UK. Thirty-four Palestinian students with places at British universities have permission to study in the UK but most were told by the Foreign Office that their children may not accompany them. One student received an FCDO email days before evacuation informing her she could not bring her husband and three young children and cannot leave them behind. The Refugee Council and Oxford University raised concerns about blocking around 20 children. The group holds fully funded scholarships, includes Chevening scholars and at least four medical doctors, and were assisted to leave Gaza.
