"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"Some 204,000 houses were built between January and December of this year, based on registrations for energy performance certificates, which are required in all new builds. Data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) this week showed figures were short of the average 300,000 homes that would have to be built each year to hit the government's target. The data only runs from the week commencing 5 January until 14 December, but new registrations are consistently low around Christmas, the figures show."
The Independent seeks donations to fund journalists and maintain free access to reporting without paywalls, citing investigations and documentary work such as scrutiny of Elon Musk's PAC and 'The A Word'. Just over 200,000 homes have been built in England this year. Some 204,000 houses were registered via energy performance certificates between January and December. ONS figures show this total is short of the 300,000 homes per year average needed to reach a 1.5 million target by the next election. EPC registrations averaged 4,079 per week, down from a 2024 mean of 4,206 and 4,360 in 2023. Planning permissions for new builds fell 15 percent to a 12-year low. The data cover the week commencing 5 January to 14 December and registrations are consistently low around Christmas.
