The Trump administration's proposals for stricter visa regulations for international students may lead to a decline in their numbers at U.S. universities. This shift could benefit elite universities in the U.K., anticipating an influx of redirected applicants. Currently, over a million international students contribute approximately $50 billion annually to the U.S. economy. However, data shows a marked decrease in interest among prospective students for U.S. universities, with a 50% drop in search volume reported between January and April. Education consultants affirm growing uncertainty drives students to reconsider their options.
"There's been a dramatic shift in relation to interest in studying in the United States," says professor Simon Marginson of Oxford University.
"The internet data we have on search by prospective students and their families shows that there's been a drop of about 50% in the volume of search for study in the U.S. between Jan. 5 and April 30 this year."
"It's those people who have options, who are looking at the U.S. with quite big question marks right now," Hawkins explains.
"The nervousness that the students we're working with in future years have is what I term the 'floating vote,' which reflects their indecision amid changing policies."
