Hyperoptic's London outage exposes untested backup system
"The Zayo link is down and we're currently working with Openreach to get it fixed. Their engineers just arrived. All teams are now on site working diligently to get the problem sorted."
"While our network is designed with built-in redundancy, we are also reviewing a secondary link that did not activate as expected, which should have limited customer impact."
"The outage was caused by damage to a fibre cable at our local aggregation point. Hyperoptic's engineering teams, along with our partners, worked tirelessly throughout the night to carry out repairs and restore connectivity as quickly as possible."
A damaged fibre cable at a local aggregation point caused a Hyperoptic broadband outage across multiple London exchanges on November 11, affecting postcodes W2–W9 to varying degrees. A secondary Zayo link failed to activate as expected, preventing the designed redundancy from reducing customer impact. Engineers from Hyperoptic and partner firms, including Openreach, worked through the night and restored service by about 03:00 on November 12. Customer reports noted that the public status page initially did not reflect the outage. Service disruption lasted less than 24 hours for affected customers. The incident did not qualify for automatic compensation under Ofcom’s voluntary scheme.
