Julia Wandelt, 24, was convicted of harassing Kate and Gerry McCann after claiming to be their missing daughter and repeatedly demanding a DNA test. Wandelt turned up at the McCanns' home and sent sinister letters and messages. The couple gave emotional evidence from behind a curtain so they would not have to see Wandelt, and Mrs McCann heard Wandelt cry, "Why are you doing this to me?" The McCanns said false claims and public vitriol have compounded their trauma, hindered investigations, and intensified trolling. A co-defendant alleged the McCanns arranged the abduction.
