HIQA to be called before the Public Accounts Committee over nursing home inspections
Briefly

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has invited HIQA to present before the committee following reports of neglect in nursing homes, including Beneavin Manor. Labour TD Eoghan Kenny criticized the state's failure to ensure dignity for older residents, while TD Paul McAuliffe expressed public concern over the treatment at these facilities. He emphasized the need for accountability from both staff and corporate entities, and called for scrutiny of the funding mechanisms, particularly the Nursing Home Support Scheme, in light of the substantial costs associated with care.
"I think it's been eight years since [HIQA] came before the Public Accounts Committee, and I think it's about time to do again... our older people are being treated in this way."
"If a person across the country had an older person in a nursing home... inspectors from HIQA actually came to a number of those nursing homes and found no fault and I think that has to be questioned."
"I think we can say, very easily, it's a neglect in basic care and there has to be accountability... the corporate entity... shouldn't be absolved of what happened."
"The funding of the Nursing Home Support Scheme... has to also be examined... far in excess of €6 million was paid into the Beneavin campus."
