Harvard researcher charged with smuggling frog embryos is being released from federal custody
Briefly

Kseniia Petrova, a Russian-born scientist, was released from ICE custody after being charged with smuggling frog embryos into the U.S. The judge ruled she didn't pose a danger, and the materials were nonhazardous. Detained since February after her return from France, Petrova stressed that she was not aware of needing to declare her samples at customs. The Department of Homeland Security claimed otherwise, citing evidence of intent to smuggle. She remains under the U.S. Marshals Service adhering to the smuggling charge.
"The judge ruled that Petrova didn't present a danger, and that the embryos were nonliving, nonhazardous and posed a threat to no one."
"Petrova stated she did not realize the items needed to be declared and was not trying to sneak anything into the country."
