Great Ormond Street apologises to families of children harmed by surgeon Yaser Jabbar ahead of report
"Firstly, and most importantly, I want to once again offer my personal, sincere apologies to you and your family. "We have had many conversations with patients and families, and we know nothing we can do can make up for the experiences you have had and the impact it has had on you. "I understand that the review process itself may have added further to your distress and I am also sorry for this."
"Families whose children were harmed by a surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) have received a letter of apology ahead of a new report. It is already known that some children suffered severe harm under the care of the surgeon, who worked on lower limb reconstruction. Mr Jabbar is understood to live abroad and no longer has a licence to practise medicine in the UK."
A review examined 789 children treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital and at three private hospitals plus Chelsea and Westminster. Over 85 patients are reported to have been harmed during the surgeon Yaser Jabbar's time at Great Ormond Street. GOSH emailed affected families on 21 January with an apology and an offer to contact police if they wished. The hospital chief executive expressed regret, acknowledged additional distress caused by the review process, and stated intentions to share findings and actions taken to rebuild trust. The Metropolitan Police said it would study the forthcoming report but had not received criminal allegations to date.
