A confrontation over queue-jumping at a supermarket escalated when the bus driver pushed ahead and was challenged by Andrew Clark. The driver returned to his car, donned a balaclava, followed Clark outside and attacked him, restraining and striking him until Clark fell and hit his head. Paramedics treated Clark for serious head injuries and he died in hospital three days later. The driver was initially charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, later upgraded to murder, but he denied murder and admitted manslaughter; the prosecution accepted the lesser plea. A five-year custodial sentence drew criticism as disproportionately lenient and prompted calls for reconsideration and appeal to the Attorney General.
