Friends left 'in tears' over 8k rental scam
"I went to the property with my mum with all of my belongings I knocked on the door and no one came."
"I had never heard of this sort of thing happening, I didn't understand how it could happen."
"We were so excited to live together. We had both packed up our lives to move in, we were fortunate to have family homes to move back into."
"mirrored exactly what a tenancy process looks like"
Two friends agreed to rent a Chapel Market, Islington flat and paid roughly £8,000 upfront as a six-week deposit plus three months' rent. The pair attended an in-person viewing, with one friend joining by video call, and completed paperwork via a letting agent who appeared legitimate. On move-in day a cleaner opened the door and said the property was a holiday let. The women have identified roughly 20 other people who report being scammed using the same property. The victims describe the fraud as sophisticated and warn others to be cautious.
