Doug Gurr, a former head of Amazon UK, has been selected as the preferred candidate to serve a full five-year term as chair of the Competition and Markets Authority after an open competition. Gurr was interim chair from January 2025. Business Secretary Peter Kyle said Gurr has been more commercially minded and credited his leadership with supporting the government's pro-growth agenda. Gurr previously joined Amazon in 2011, served as China country manager and UK country manager, and left in 2020 to lead the Natural History Museum. The CMA is investigating major cloud providers and proposed strategic market status for Microsoft and Amazon Web Services after finding competition weaknesses.
