"Driverless cars could be coming to London this year, according to the US company Waymo. While an official date for the rollout has yet to be set, the firm reportedly hopes to have its robocars up and running in the capital by September. It is understood that 24 Waymo cars are currently driving around London streets with drivers in tow as they map the city ahead of a driverless release, subject to regulatory approvals."
"Local authorities attending this week's event at the Transport Museum appeared to share enthusiastic sentiments about driverless cars coming to the capital. We know that unlike human drivers, automated vehicles don't get tired, don't get distracted, and don't drive under the influence," said Local Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood, according to the BBC. She added: "We're supporting Waymo and other operators through our passenger pilots, and pro-innovation regulations to make self-driving cars a reality on British roads."
Waymo targets a potential driverless rollout in London, aiming for operations by September subject to regulatory approval. Twenty-four Waymo vehicles are currently mapping London streets with safety drivers onboard, and safety drivers will remain during initial passenger pilots before a broader roll-out later in the year. If approved, the deployment would be Waymo's first robotaxi operations outside the United States. Coverage areas remain unclear, with airport routes reportedly excluded. Waymo vehicles are learning UK road nuances such as zebra crossings, and UK consultations on self-driving regulations continue toward rules expected in the second half of 2027.
