The United Nations has expressed serious alarm over the discovery of numerous bodies in Tripoli, Libya, particularly in areas previously controlled by the now-defunct militia, the Stabilisation Support Apparatus (SSA). Following recent clashes that resulted in the militia leader Abdel-Ghani al-Kikli's death, human rights violations have come to light, including torture and extrajudicial killings. UN rights chief Volker Turk emphasized the necessity of sealing these sites for evidence preservation and called for international efforts to ensure accountability within the tumultuous context of Libyan politics.
Our worst-held fears are being confirmed: dozens of bodies have been discovered at these sites, along with the discovery of suspected instruments of torture and abuse, and potential evidence of extrajudicial killings, Turk said in a statement.
Turk called for the immediate sealing of all affected locations to preserve evidence, demanding international access to ensure accountability.
