"The row of shops (and pub) here used to be known as Butchers' Row as it was lined with, well, butchers of course - and they would hang their meat outside their stores on rows of metal hooks. Most of the buildings have since been redeveloped, but the gap between shops on Aldgate High Street has been there since shortly after WWII. The gap wasn't due to bomb damage, but for some reason, one building was cleared, and later its neighbour as well."
"Now, the City of London is planning to turn the gap into horse stabling for its mounted police. They used to be based in a police building near Guildhall, but with that building's closure, they've been sharing stables with the Metropolitan Police at Scotland Yard. The police's plan involves combining the vacant plot at 52 Aldgate with the neighbouring properties at 50-51 Aldgate High Street to create a site for the police's Mounted Unit to occupy."
The gap between shops on Aldgate High Street, left vacant since shortly after WWII, is set to become stables for the City of London Police Mounted Unit. The vacant plot at 52 Aldgate will be combined with neighbouring properties at 50–51 Aldgate High Street to create a unified site. The City of London owns the properties. Horses will likely enter via a rear road while the main road frontage will serve as the human entrance. The Mounted Unit currently has seven horses, including operational mounts and young remounts in training. The new stables will allow all horses and staff to be based at one location.
