Deep coal mine plans officially dropped
Briefly

The UK government has abandoned plans for its first deep coal mine in over three decades located in Whitehaven, Cumbria. This decision follows a High Court ruling that overturned initial planning permission due to environmental concerns raised by groups like Friends of the Earth. The High Court found the government's rationale of no net increase in greenhouse gas emissions 'legally flawed.' The mining developer, West Cumbria Mining, failed to respond to reassessments and ultimately chose to withdraw its planning application on March 31. Local activists celebrated this victory, calling for a focus on green job creation instead.
MHCLG has confirmed that West Cumbria Mining withdrew its planning application for the Whitehaven mine, ending the UK’s first deep coal mining plans in 30 years.
Tony Bosworth of Friends of the Earth expressed delight at the news, praising local campaigners and emphasizing the need to shift focus towards green job opportunities.
