Channel migrant delivery riders arrested in swoop on London asylum hotels
Briefly

Migrants in the UK suspected of working as fast-food delivery riders shortly after arrival have been arrested for illegal working and breaching bail conditions. They were allegedly claiming taxpayer benefits while earning money from Just Eat and Deliveroo. Arrests occurred outside a London hotel with phones and bikes seized. Food delivery company leaders were called to the Home Office to address illegal working concerns, leading to a 90-day plan for facial verification and fraud checks. Asylum seekers are typically not permitted to work during their claim processing.
A second swoop at 4pm saw one cyclist put into an unmarked custody van. A third enforcement team was still at the hotel on Monday night.
Just Eat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats were summoned to the Home Office as the government demanded facial verification and fraud checks in the next 90 days.
Ministers Dame Angela Eagle and Justin Madders meet with food delivery bosses to discuss illegal working as asylum seekers are not usually allowed to work.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper praised commitments from major food delivery providers for daily facial recognition checks for drivers working with them.
