His co-defendant, Mohammad Kabir, an Afghan asylum seeker, was acquitted of intentional strangulation, attempted child abduction and intent to commit a sexual offence after denying contact or sexual intentions. The pair were seen on CCTV in a supermarket a day after the incident and the attack prompted local protests. Mulakhil arrived in the UK months before the offences and made an immigration application linked to problems in Afghanistan. Police guidance now allows release of nationality or ethnicity for policing purposes, but forces still do not confirm suspects' immigration status.
