Bishop Brendan Comiskey passed away at the age of 89 in Louth County Hospital. He is remembered for his significant role and tenures, particularly his resignation as Bishop of Ferns in 2002, which was a recognition of his failures in governance related to abuse within the Church. Both Archbishop Eamon Martin and Archbishop Dermot Farrell acknowledged his courageous decision to resign and his humility in accepting the consequences of neglect faced by abuse survivors, reaffirming the Church's commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
Bishop Comiskey's death will rekindle memories of pain and suffering for many and I my thoughts and prayers at this time are also with all those who have been traumatized or let down by the awful sins and crimes and abuse perpetrated by members of the Church.
His words communicated both his humility, and the painful discovery of the reality of abuse, and its long-lasting consequences.
