"These young women are not thieves and they are not dishonest, Mr Winehouse. They have always been honest to you. They sold items that they owned that you knew they owned and that you were going to sell and you have said this to journalists out of nothing more than petty jealousy, because they happened to make a bit of money at the auction and you brought these proceedings for nothing more than petty jealousy as well. Do you have a response to that?"
"If they had stolen things they would be criminals wouldn't they?"
"Yes, you are wrong."
The High Court considered a claim by Mitch Winehouse against two friends of Amy Winehouse over items sold at auction following her 2011 death. The two women defend the claim, asserting the items were either gifts from Amy or were already their property. Mr Winehouse said he expected the 2021 auction proceeds to be split between himself, Amy's mother Janis, and the Amy Winehouse Foundation; the sale raised about £1.4m. Mr Winehouse acknowledged contacting police and speaking to advisers, and he accepted he has no evidence the women removed items from a lock-up. He denied acting from petty jealousy.
