Aid efforts intensify after deadly Myanmar-Thailand quake DW 03/30/2025
Briefly

Myanmar is grappling with a humanitarian disaster after a devastating earthquake on Friday, resulting in over 1,600 fatalities and thousands of injuries. The US Geological Service warns that the eventual death toll could reach up to 10,000, with property damages likely to surpass the country’s annual economic output. Ongoing civil unrest due to the 2021 military coup has hindered recovery efforts. Despite these challenges, countries like India, China, and Thailand have begun delivering emergency aid, while the opposition National Unity Government has announced a temporary pause in hostilities to facilitate rescue operations.
"All military and civilian hospitals, as well as health care workers, must work together in a coordinated and efficient manner to ensure effective medical response," said Myanmar's junta chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, according to state-run media.
The NUG, together with resistance forces, allied organizations and civil society groups, will carry out rescue operations," it said in a statement.
We have received no aid, and there are no rescue workers in sight," said resident Han Zin, highlighting the dire situation in Sagaing.
Myanmar's death toll could reach 10,000, and property losses could exceed the country's annual economic production according to the US Geological Service.
